PS4 is ‘First and Foremost’ a Gaming Console

Sony and Microsoft are both readying the big push for each company’s next-gen consoles during next month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. As it stands, the Xbox One has faced its share of marketing mishaps amidst an increasing focus from Microsoft on selling the console as an all-in-one gaming hub. But during the AllThingsD11Conference, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai says the company is committed to keeping the PlayStation 4 directed toward gamers.

“The most important thing we need to make sure we do, at least initially, is that we all agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers,” said Hirai. “If we miss that part than I don’t think we get the initial establishment of the console.”

Sony struggled to recapture the massive appeal of the PlayStation 2 when the company launched the PlayStation 3 back in 2006. A high price point and increased attention on the then year-old Xbox 360 forced Sony to rethink its original marketing strategies; strategies that ironically enough focused on an all-in-one entertainment hub with a push toward Blu-ray.

But in the years following the console’s launch, the PlayStation 3 managed to find more solid footing, catching up with the Xbox 360 and even outpacing Microsoft’s console in some regions.

Now, if Hirai’s comments and the recent PlayStation 4 unveiling are any indication, Sony is planning to market its next console to a more game-specific audience. But according to Sony’s CEO, the next-gen hardware will still have other uses.

“We take a look at this first and foremost as a game console,” said Hirai. “We don’t want to end there. That’s an area we will obviously reveal and talk about in the coming months.”

PS3 Games You Should Play Before Next-Gen

In nearly six months, the third generation PlayStation will give way to its successor the PlayStation 4. In case you have missed out on some of the best PlayStation 3 games, here is our list of must play games before the PlayStation 4 release.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
After playing the original Uncharted, I was left wanting more and Uncharted 2 delivered in every way. I remember playing the opening scene and was absolutely blown away by how cinematic it was. The rest of the game was just as fun with multiple cinematic scenes to support its gripping story. To this day, Uncharted 2 remains as one of my favorite games of all time.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
MGSFrom the moment I played the original Metal Gear Solid back, I knew I was going to love the franchise. Metal Gear has remained on of my favorite franchises and although the story became a bit confusing, MGS4 answers a lot for the player (may not totally make sense if you are new to the series). My only gripe with this game was the extensive cut scenes which literally felt like hours on end sometimes.

Fallout 3
F3Anything that takes place in a post apocalyptic world sparks my interest right away. The game play, perk system and length of the campaign was what I loved most about this game. On the flip side, I felt the story may not deliver to everyone. Regardless of a somewhat weak story, this game definitely remains one of the best PlayStation 3 titles.

Batman:Arkham Asylum
Remember when superhero games used to suck? I do. Arkham Asylum was the game that changed the way superhero games were perceived. The story was awesome, the combat system was almost perfect and the Joker riddles were entertaining. If you enjoy Batman I am sure you have played it, but if not, now is the time to do so.

GRID 2 Special Edition Costs $188,700

No, that’s not a typo. Officially called the BAC Mono Edition – this ridiculously and very very pricey special edition will cost you a fortune.

You might also think that’s awfully expensive for the special edition of a racing game (any game, really), but allow us to put things in perspective. The GRID 2 BAC Mono Edition isn’t so much a special edition of a game as it is a luxury sports car that happens to come with a game. Specifically, the BAC Mono Edition comes with the Mono, essentially a street legal formula racing car. Also included is a racing suit and helmet, a copy of GRID 2 and a PlayStation 3 on which to play it. According to BAC’s website, a Mono with no frills has a base price of £96,495 ($145,919), and that’s before throwing in VAT. Only one copy of the BAC Mono Edition is being manufactured, making it something a collector’s item. You can place your pre-order exclusively with GAME. Oh, and shipping is free.

Games Anyone?

Strategy Inc.

2013_05_22_Games

Yesterday, Microsoft introduced the next generation of its Xbox video game console. The Xbox One will compete with Nintendo’s Wii U and Sony’s PlayStation 3 in a market that has been radically transformed in the past few years. Now that smartphones and tablets deliver high quality gaming content to everyone that has a few dollars to spare, home consoles need to provide customers with additional features in order to lure them into paying hundreds of dollars for a dedicated gaming device.

Microsoft’s strategy with the Xbox One is pretty clear. With its abilities to stream video content and pass through signals from a cable set-top box, the new console is designed to become the center of the living room. With voice and gesture controls, Xbox Home could add some of the features to the TV experience that have been part of the consistent Apple TV rumours.

Today’s chart shows that…
