PS3 Games You Should Play Before Next-Gen

In nearly six months, the third generation PlayStation will give way to its successor the PlayStation 4. In case you have missed out on some of the best PlayStation 3 games, here is our list of must play games before the PlayStation 4 release.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
After playing the original Uncharted, I was left wanting more and Uncharted 2 delivered in every way. I remember playing the opening scene and was absolutely blown away by how cinematic it was. The rest of the game was just as fun with multiple cinematic scenes to support its gripping story. To this day, Uncharted 2 remains as one of my favorite games of all time.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
MGSFrom the moment I played the original Metal Gear Solid back, I knew I was going to love the franchise. Metal Gear has remained on of my favorite franchises and although the story became a bit confusing, MGS4 answers a lot for the player (may not totally make sense if you are new to the series). My only gripe with this game was the extensive cut scenes which literally felt like hours on end sometimes.

Fallout 3
F3Anything that takes place in a post apocalyptic world sparks my interest right away. The game play, perk system and length of the campaign was what I loved most about this game. On the flip side, I felt the story may not deliver to everyone. Regardless of a somewhat weak story, this game definitely remains one of the best PlayStation 3 titles.

Batman:Arkham Asylum
Remember when superhero games used to suck? I do. Arkham Asylum was the game that changed the way superhero games were perceived. The story was awesome, the combat system was almost perfect and the Joker riddles were entertaining. If you enjoy Batman I am sure you have played it, but if not, now is the time to do so.

Metal Gear Rising demo coming January 23

A playable demo of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released in Europe on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Marketplace on January 23, Konami has announced.

The teaser offers three stages to enjoy, allowing gamers to try out the hack-‘n-slash spin-off’s fancy Zan-Datsu combat system as playable hero Raiden.

Metal Gear Rising sees the silver-haired ninja slicing battling soldiers and mechs using his high frequency blade. The game itself takes place four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, in a post-Patriot world where numerous rogue entities have rear their heads

Developed by Platinum Games and Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Rising will be released for PS3 and 360 in February 2012.

Top 12 PlayStation 3 Trailers of 2012

As 2012 nears its end, so does another year in the gaming world. Regardless of the critics reviews of each game, these trailers were simply the best of this year. Before you start to watch, if you have the download speeds, I advise you to download the 720p version and watch them all full screen. I put a lot of time into this post, and watched enough game trailers for the rest of my life. I hope you enjoy!

12. Tomb Raider “Crossroads”

At the beginning of the story, users experience Lara embarking on her first job after graduating from University. She shows fear in the face of danger, initially lacking confidence in her own abilities and judgment. Still, we can see the seeds of what Lara will eventually become. She possesses a powerful sense of moral courage. She is clever, resourceful and determined. This trailer first premiered at E3 earlier this year. This trailer shows off a good amount of game play in which you will be surviving and scavenging the world with Lara in beginning of the new Tomb Raider game. Instead of exploring and invading caves this Tomb Raider looks to take on a survival angle. What I liked about this trailer are the intense scenes and cinematic sequences, however the gameplay mixed with the cinematic scenes doesn’t quite flow to perfection, just making it into the top 12. Lara Croft fights back into action March 5th 2013.

11. BEYOND: Two Souls

Live the remarkable life of Jodie Holmes, a young woman who possesses supernatural powers through a psychic link to an invisible entity. Experience the most striking moments of Jodie’s life as your actions and decisions determine her fate. As she traverses the globe, Jodie will face incredible challenges against a backdrop of emotionally-charged events never before seen in a video game. I liked the trailer started with a mystery to it which built up suspense, however the climax and ending of the trailer focused too much on gameplay. This shift from cinematic to gameplay threw off the feel, as well as the lack of action left my interest in limbo. Watch out for this sci-fi thriller some time in mid 2013.

10. Far Cry 3 Story

Beyond the limits of civilization lies an island, a lawless place ruled by piracy and human misery, where your only escapes are drugs or the muzzle of a gun. This is where you find yourself, trapped in a place that has lost the ability to discern right from wrong. A dark place that lives by the principles of violence. Discover the island’s bloody secrets and take the fight to the enemy; improvise and use your environment to survive; beware the beauty and mystery of this unexplored paradise, and live to outwit its roster of ruthless, desperate characters. You’ll need more than luck to survive. The trailer tells an intriguing story to the viewer while opening up the world of Far Cry 3 at the same time – well done. On the flip side, there is too much gameplay for me and not enough big events in the trailer to keep me wanting more. Far Cry 3 was recently released and received a lot of positive reviews. It has definitely been one of the best games of the year – look for it to receive the prestigious ‘Game of the Year’ award from several critics.

9. BioShock Infinite “Beast of America”

Set in 1912, players assume the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, sent to the flying city of Columbia on a rescue mission. His target? Elizabeth, imprisoned since childhood. During their daring escape, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond — one that lets Booker augment his own abilities with her world-altering control over the environment. Together, they fight from high-speed Sky-Lines, in the streets and houses of Columbia, on giant zeppelins, and in the clouds, all while learning to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities, and immersing players in a story that is not only steeped in profound thrills and surprises, but also invests its characters with what IGN called “Emotional ties (that) will continue to set the bar in gaming.” The bittersweetness continues with gameplay in this trailer. Yes, we get to see what the game will be like, but there is nothing to build anticipation about this game. All games can look cool and fun to play, but we really know for the most part how a game will look through previous trailers. I want more! Maybe that’s my problem. Clearly a great trailer here earning it a spot in the top 10. Look for this game February 26th, 2013 – if it doesn’t get delayed again…

8. Crysis 3

The third game sees players take on the role of Prophet as he returns to New York, only to discover the city’s been encased in a giant Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders. Set in 2047 (24 years after Crysis 2), Prophet is said to be on a “revenge mission” after uncovering the truth behind Cell’s motives for building the quarantined Nanodomes. The citizens were told that the giant citywide structures were erected to protect the population and to cleanse these metropolises of the remnants of Ceph forces. In reality, the Nanodomes are CELL’s covert attempt at a land and technology grab in their quest for global domination. I love the music – it gives a chaotic/freakiness, adrenaline rush sorta feel. Once again my only gripe deals with the small bits of gameplay in this trailer. The gameplay clips jump around way too much and don’t take time to offer anything new in each clip, which creates a mess of gameplay all thrown together clip after clip. Argued as one of the best looking games of all time, look for its release February 19th, 2013.

7. Assassin’s Creed 3

The year is 1775. The American colonies are about to revolt. You are Connor, an assassin who has sworn to secure liberty for his people and his nation. To do so, you will hunt your enemies across a staggeringly large, open, and realistic world. You will unleash your lethal skills in a violent quest that will take you from chaotic city streets to blood-soaked battlefields in the hostile American wilderness and beyond. You will meet legendary heroes of American history, and together you will conspire to annihilate those who threaten Liberty itself. The trailer starts with a bit of anticipation and leads to the climax, an assassination scene in the woods which is pretty damn awesome. After that the trailer slows down and ends several seconds later. Bummer right? A well done trailer, just too short for my liking. A few weeks ago AC3 was released. With reviews similar to Far Cry 3, I think AC3 had expectations set way too high for this game. It was undoubtedly one of the most hyped games of the year, and after playing the game for several hours I had to put down the controller. AC3 was just a let down for me.

6. Star Wars 1313

Star Wars 1313 puts the player in the role of a bounty hunter navigating the planet Coruscant’s subterranean level 1313 underworld as they try to uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy. The game will take a more mature, gritty direction compared to past Star Wars video games and emphasizes fast-paced, gadget and weapon based combat using tools exclusive to bounty hunters rather than force and lightsaber based combat. I really enjoyed this trailer although I am not a huge Star Wars fan. It’s something new, which is good, since the Star Wars series is so legendary. Everything seems totally normal until something goes wrong and the music/sound effects go perfect with the situation. The game looks like a lot of fun, but this trailer also threw a few clips of gameplay together – my only complaint about it. No specific date yet, coming some time in 2013.

5. Mass Effect 3 “Take Earth Back”

The Mass Effect series of videogames details the adventures of Systems Alliance Commander Shepard as he or she tries to defeat a race of machines called Reapers. The Reapers are immensely powerful and purge the galaxy of all sentient life in 50,000 year cycles. In the Mass Effect 2 DLC Arrival, Shepard goes into batarian space to rescue a deep cover agent named Dr. Amanda Kenson and learns that the Reapers are close to returning. To delay them, Shepard destroys a mass relay, killing 300,000 batarian colonists as collateral damage. Consequently, Shepard is ordered to appear on Earth for a trial regarding his or her decision. Bottom line, this trailer gets it done. The trailer is put together just the way I like them, no gameplay. Everyone familiar with the series knew the gameplay would be similar to the previous ones so why dwell on more gameplay? They didn’t. A great trailer put together which really shows off the story off the idea of the game and what to expect. Originally I had this as the #7 trailer, but after watching it again I just had to move it up into the top 5. I am probably one of the few people who have missed out on this epic series. However, earlier this year the game was released and received quite a bit of criticism for its ending. A let down none the less, but at least they released alternate endings for DLC and the rest of the game had to be amazing since it’s been nominated by multiple critics for ‘Game of the Year.’

4. Grand Theft Auto V

Three acquaintances are drawn into Los Santos’ criminal underworld “in the pursuit of the almighty American dollar”. According to Dan Houser, each of the protagonists is unlike any primary character that has appeared in a Grand Theft Auto title to date: Michael represents a protagonist who “won” and is now trying to adjust to life after his story has come to an end; Trevor is styled after a supporting character who has been re-cast in the role of protagonist; and Franklin is someone who has had no real exposure to a life of crime until the events of the game. This game will be fast-paced and action packed as always. I have been a fan of the series for a long time and this trailer got me stoked for GTA V. Although this trailer came in at #4, it was flawless – the next three were just better.

3. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

Not much information has been released regarding this new MGS game. We know it takes place after Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and the rest of the information about the story can be found in the trailer. As a fan of the series I may be a bit biased, but this game is going to be amazing. I have loved every other MGS console game and can’t find any reason why this one would be any different. Some may not like the sub titles in the trailer, but if the story doesn’t take place in the United States or an English speaking country, why would you expect anything different? Snake should be here near the end of 2013, and I can hardly wait.

2. Dead Island Riptide

They thought they had escaped the terrors of Banoi and survived the apocalypse on a corrupted paradise. Then their fate took a turn for the worse…The Dead Island heroes escaped in a helicopter to the safety of a military ship, but when a furious storm hits and the virus suddenly spreads throughout the crew, the nightmare starts all over again, leaving hope drowning in the rising tides. Whoever comes up with the trailers for this series is a genus. I love this trailer so much just like the original Dead Island cinematic trailer. This one tells the a brief story which involves the characters coming to realize their time has come. This second installment of the series is available April 26th 2013.

1. Dishonored Debut

You are the once-trusted bodyguard of the Empress. Framed for her murder and driven by revenge, you must become an infamous assassin, known only by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. As you navigate a world torn apart by plague and oppressed by a government armed with strange new technologies, the truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city. The choices you make will determine the fate of the world, but no matter what happens your old life is gone forever. This trailer is dark, action packed and everything else I look for in a game trailer, so just sit back and enjoy the next few minutes. Dishonored came out a few weeks ago and has received mostly positive reviews including multiple ‘Game of the Year’ nominations.

Well, there you have it – 2012’s best trailers. Hope you enjoyed these trailers and if you didn’t, well there’s always next year. If I missed some of your favorite trailers or you just want to drop a line, feel free to leave a reply.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Collector’s Edition

The collector’s edition of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will include an awesome looking “High frequency plasma lamp” as well as the game itself (in a metal case) and its soundtrack. The lamp includes a sword down the middle of the glass and the name of the game glowing along the bottom of it. If you ask us it’s pretty kick-ass. Konami hasn’t set a price for the collector’s edition yet.
