PlayStation Profits Decline, Sony Q2 Net Loss of $198 Million

Sony made a net loss of ¥15.5 billion ($198 million) in its second fiscal quarter, while its gaming division saw year-on-year declines in profit. The Q2 figure represents year-on-year reduction in loss of 42.6 percent, and improvement from the $312 million loss made in Q1.

Games-wise, the PlayStation division’s operating income in Q2 was ¥2.3 billion ($29 million), a year-on-year decline of 23.3 percent. Sony shifted 3.5 million PS3 and PS2 units across the quarter, compared to 4.9 million last year. Vita and PSP sales came in at 1.6 million.

The company has lowered end-year projections of Vita and PSP sales significantly, now down to 10 million from an initial figure of 16 million. In May, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai indicated a fiscal year estimate of 10 million for Vita alone. The PS3 and PS2’s combined fiscal-year estimate remains at 16 million.

In contrast, software performance saw slight growth across the quarter. PS3 and PS2 sales rose year-on-year to 41.4 million, up from 40.2 million. Vita and PSP figures also climbed, up from 8.2 million to 8.7 million.

Pre-order Crysis 3, Get Crysis Free

Crysis will be offered as a free download to all gamers who pre-order the upcoming third entry in the celebrated sci-fi franchise, Electronic Arts said today.

Crysis was originally released on the PC back in 2007, and wowed critics for its lush visuals and intense FPS action-oriented gameplay. The game centres on an on-going battle between the U.S. and North Korea for a mysterious alien artifact, and features a host of customisable weapons for you to tinker with.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli commented: “The release of Crysis in 2007 was truly a watershed moment for first-person shooters and raised the bar on cutting-edge visuals and gameplay and we could not be more thrilled to include the original game as a pre-order bonus.”

“Building upon the framework laid by the previous games, Crysis 3 will deliver an action-packed experience that encourages players to access, adapt and attack the Seven Wonders of the New York City Liberty Dome and challenges that stand in their way.”

In addition to receiving the original game for free, pre-ordering Crysis 3 will also net you the Hunter Edition of the upcoming sequel, which includes a host of extra multiplayer bonus content, such as the Predator bow, Hunter Nanosuit module and more.

In Crysis 3, gamers witness Prophet’s return to New York only to discover it has been completely encased in a Nanodome engineered by the nefarious Cell Corporation.

Inside, the environment has transformed into a sprawling urban rain forest popular with overgrown trees, swamps and rivers, with the entire area divided into seven districts – hence the Seven Wonders of New York moniker.

Crysis 3 will be released on PS3, PC and Xbox 360 in February 2013.

Black Ops II: Zombies Mode Detailed and Official Trailer

In answer to questions posed by G4, Zombies Creative Lead Jimmy Zielinski further detailed the features coming to Call of Duty Black Ops II’s zombie slaying co-op mode. When asked about map size in comparison to earlier zombie maps, Zielinski touched on what the three different game modes will offer.

”The story mode, Tranzit is a huge map with a number of different areas to explore, all of which are connected by a bus route. The bus route is also part of the world and can be explored, either on foot, or by bus, which travels to each of the areas of the map. You’ll meet a few new characters, some new zombies and fight them off using weapons ranging from new near-future weapons, some faithful stand-bys and a few wunderweapons. Ultimately, strategy is the name of the game here.

When playing Survival, the team has taken the individual areas and tailored them for classic survival play. The individual Survival areas are adaptations of the locations in Tranzit, but they’ve been designed to accommodate survival-style play.

Finally, there’s Grief, or what we like to call “4Z4.” There are two human teams that go head-to-head; however, they can’t kill one another – they can only fight to repel the oncoming zombie horde. The name of this game is “last man standing” – whoever is left, that team wins. So to achieve this, we provide some griefing mechanics that enable teams to “encourage “zombies to cast their attention on the other team. If used properly, the other team won’t be able to overcome the zombie attack and the remaining team will be left victorious.

Between Tranzit, Survival and Grief, there is an absolute ton of gameplay here – Zombies is really its own stand-alone game.”

Zombies is shaping up well, featuring more extensive modes than those found in the previous games.

Call of Duty Black Ops II comes out November 13th for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC and November 18th for Wii U in North America with other Territories on November 30th. If your Pre Order now you can receive the Nuke town 2025 bonus map and access to the XP Launch Weekend.

What’s Coming In Co-op?

allyoucangame

I personally don’t think there are enough great co-op games on the market today. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are games like COD that allow split screen online and I thank them for that, but it isn’t enough! My boyfriend and I are both gamers that live together and it gets tough taking turns in games like Battlefield 3 that don’t offer any two-player capabilities! We have even contemplated buying another PS3 and television just so we could actually play together at the same time (an idea still open for consideration). Until then, developers need to remember that there may be more than one person per system playing and we would much rather game together than take turns on the sticks! I’m no longer satisfied with just SOME games having online split-screen, or shitty co-op story modes, which is why I have been on the hunt for a…

Head-to-Head: BO2 vs MOH

In a little over two weeks, gamers around the world will go crazy for Black Ops II. In the mean time, Medal of Honor has taken over the number one spot in Europe for sales. Should you go buy Medal of Honor today (if you haven’t already) or wait for Black Ops 2? Which is going to be the better of the two you may ask yourself, well take a look at the review scores and see for yourself. According to Metacritic the scores for previous games are listed.

Call of Duty

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – 94
  • Call of Duty: World at War – 85
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 94
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops – 88
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – 88

Medal of Honor

  • Medal of Honor – 75
  • Medal of Honor: Warfighter – 55

Reviews are sometimes biased because its only what that one person gives the game, so that’s my warning. However, clearly the Call of Duty series has been more successful with reviews and they have figured out a formula that sells. It seems to me the Medal of Honor series tried to duplicate the exact same formula and gameplay as the Call of Duty series with their recent release of Warfighter. This attempt is seen as a failure to me and many critics have ripped this game apart earning the game an embarrassing low score of 55 of Metacritic. I know Call of Duty has remained what people would call “the same” over the past few years, and they complain about this, however they continue to buy the new game every year. The new Black Ops looks to have changed a little, which I believe is good for the series and will get people excited. Save your money for the sure thing and wait two weeks for Black Ops II and stay tuned for a special ‘Everything You Need to Know’ on Black Ops II coming next week.

Drink NOS and Get Free Assassin’s Creed Multiplayer Character

Assassin’s Creed Sharpshooter multiplayer character is going to require a NOS Energy Drink investment. Until January 31, 2013, the only way to obtain the Sharpshooter for AC3 is by purchasing a can of NOS and entering the code under the tab at the drinknos.com site.

The Sharpshooter requires only one NOS point to unlock, much like a similar promotion last year for Batman: Arkham City’s Batman Beyond Skin. Turns outAC3 and Batman have more in common than just their combat systems.

Monday Night Madden 2013 (Week 8)

San Francisco 49ers (5-2) @ Arizona Cardinals (4-3)

Madden Score: San Francisco 49ers 26 – Arizona Cardinals 24

Madden Analysis: The 49ers go into the 4th quarter with a 23-10 lead and nearly blow it as the Cardinals rally behind their offense to put up 14 straight points and take a 1 point lead. Alex smith drives down the field late in the 4th quarter to set up the game winning field goal as the 49ers escape an upset in Arizona.

San Francisco 49ers team leaders

Pass

  • A. Smith – 23/28/242 and 1 TD

Rush

  • F. Gore – 16/93, 1 TD and 1 FUMBLE

Receiving

  • V. Davis – 6/60
  • M. Crabtree – 5/85
  • M. Manningham 2/32 and 1 TD

Arizona Cardinals

Pass

  • J. Skelton – 22/32/259 1 TD and 1 INT

Rush

  • L. Stevens-Howling – 15/72 1 TD and 1 FUMBLE

Receiving

  • L. Fitzgerald – 6/102
  • L. Stevens-Howling – 4/33 and 1 TD
  • A. Roberts – 4/33 and 1 TD

Kick Return

  • P. Peterson – 2/120 and 1 TD

My analysis: Alright, I agree with Madden’s pick with the 49ers winning tonight, however I think the 49ers defense is a lot better giving up much less than 23 points. Also, the Cardinals offense has struggled greatly this year giving up plenty of sacks. The 49ers open up a two game lead in the NFC West by winning tonight. I take the 49ers over the Cardinals 23-10.
